Bi-annual meeting of senior officials from the EU and USA

On 25 and 26 September 2018, the bi‑annual EU‑USA High Level Senior Officials Meeting in the area of justice and home affairs takes place in Vienna under the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The meeting allows for an expert level exchange of opinions on current topics in the area of justice and home affairs as well as the preparation of the justice and home affairs ministers meeting on 8 and 9 November 2018 in Washington, D.C. 

The talks will be led by Secretary General Christian Pilnacek (Federal Ministry of Constitutional Affairs, Reforms, Deregulation and Justice) and Secretary General Peter Goldgruber (Federal Ministry of the Interior). Participants will discuss transatlantic cooperation, in particular in the areas of counterterrorism, migration, border and visa management as well as cybersecurity and cyber law, and will focus on cross‑border access to electronic evidence. Further topics regarding EU‑US cooperation to be discussed at the meeting in Vienna are data protection and challenges of judicial cooperation with regard to third countries. 

The USA is represented by senior officials from the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice und State Department; the European Union is represented by the Austrian Presidency, representatives of the European Commission and the future Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union as well as representatives of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the EU agencies Europol, Eurojust and Frontex.
