Conference on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights
On 23 and 24 October 2018 a conference on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights took place in the Haus der EU in Vienna. The Austrian Presidency conference was organised by the Federal Ministry of Constitutional Affairs, Reforms, Deregulation and Justice in cooperation with the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and the European Commission.
Judges and persons in charge of training of judges discussed with fundamental rights practitioners from national ministries and parliaments as well as with representatives from the European Commission and the FRA the challenges of implementing the EU Charter at the national level. In a series of high‑level panels, they jointly sought potential and future solutions by looking at tools that are intended to strengthen awareness of the Charter.
Furthermore, attendees took part in working groups in which they studied selected real-life cases and questions regarding European fundamental rights and could discuss these with colleagues from other member states. The informal segment of the fundamental rights conference also gave the expert participants the opportunity to foster existing contacts and make new ones.
